Author Historian Former British Army Officer
Charlie Stuart is an author, historian and former British Army officer. He served during Operation DESERT STORM and in Northern Ireland before a career that took him through corporate law, international security and diplomacy. This included living and working as a senior diplomat in the Middle East and East Africa.
His approach draws on a career spent in complex environments and international settings, where he has seen at close hand how strategic decisions are actually made, and how strategic dilemmas and the friction of events can overwhelm even careful planning.
That combination of practical and institutional experience shapes the central question behind his work: not simply what happened, but why some systems absorb, and recover from disruption, while others do not.
WHY THE ARDENNES?
The author’s interest in the Battle of the Bulge led him to the Ardennes, where he walked the ground extensively and tested the familiar story of the campaign against the terrain itself.
The result is Hold at All Costs, the product of five years of archival research and battlefield investigation, examining how terrain, weather, logistics, timing, human judgement, resistance and chance reshaped the offensive as it unfolded.
His aim was not simply to write another history of the Battle of the Bulge, but to understand why the first eleven days unfolded as they did, and what they can still teach commanders and strategists today.

It also informs his approach to military history: reconstructing events as commanders and soldiers experienced them, rather than treating outcomes as inevitable in retrospect.
