THE GROUND CHANGES THE STORY
Maps and documents can show where units moved and orders were issued. On the ground, other factors become visible: the folds in the terrain, restricted lines of sight, gradients, road networks, dead ground, distances and obstacles that commanders could see and what their troops could realistically achieve.
A battlefield study brings those factors back into the story. Decisions that can appear obvious in retrospect often look very different when viewed from the place in which they were actually made.
MORE THAN A BATTLEFIELD TOUR
These are not scripted tours built around a sequence of monuments and anecdotes. Each study is constructed around a historical problem: a command decision, an attack, a defence, a breakdown in a plan, or the interaction between several actions across the battlefield.
The aim is not simply to establish what happened, but to reconstruct why it happened as it did.
BUILT AROUND THE GROUP
No two studies need be the same.
A visit can concentrate intensively on a single action, follow a particular unit or individual, examine a commander's decisions across several days, or trace the development of the wider campaign across the Ardennes. The itinerary is shaped around the group's interests, existing knowledge, available time and mobility.

BUILT FROM THE SOURCES
Each study draws on the same research approach that underpins Charlie Stuart's historical writing: contemporary records, unit histories, maps, personal accounts and detailed examination of the terrain.
Rather than beginning with the accepted story and finding places that illustrate it, the aim is to reconstruct events from the evidence and then test that interpretation against the ground.
FOR INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS
Studies can be arranged for individuals, families, military groups, historical societies, academic groups and organisations interested in leadership and decision-making. Previous military or historical knowledge is not required. The level and emphasis of each study can be adapted to the group.
